Crisps, savoury crackers and senbei

In Japan, savoury snacks are not limited to potato crisps: rice, nori, corn, peas and peanuts are used to create very different shapes and textures.

Senbei, okaki and arare hold a special place among Japanese rice crackers, ranging from light and puffed to dense and distinctly crunchy. They are often seasoned with soy sauce, nori, sesame, sugar or spices.

Nori crisps and noriten focus more on marine flavours, with grilled seaweed sheets or crispy tempura batter.

Japanese peas, peanuts and snack mixes provide a firmer texture and seasonings such as wasabi, while savoury crisps and crackers feature potato, corn, prawn or even fried noodles.

Familiar flavours such as barbecue and cheese therefore sit alongside umeboshi, teriyaki, wasabi and nori.

The category also includes a few specialities from other Asian countries, selected for textures or flavours that are particularly popular in Japan.
