Fukamushi sencha is a green tea in which the leaves of the Oku Yutaka shrub are plucked at the 1st harvest and steamed for a long period of time. The term fukamushi (lit. deep steaming) applies to teas that have been steamed for a long time.

Green teas treated in this way have a structure that changes under the long term action of steam. The leaf opens up much more. When brewing, the tea's aromas are more easily released, resulting in a much deeper green infusion with an intense taste.
