« With this 14th issue, Otomo pays tribute to one of the great masters of Japanese pop culture.

Undisputed figure of manga and anime, Leiji Matsumoto left us this year, on February 13, 2023.

A Japanese legend celebrated worldwide, the mangaka was also an icon in France. For good reason, Matsumoto is none other than the father of Captain Harlock, better known in France as Albator. Romantic and melancholic hero, the space pirate was one of the greatest icons of the years «Récré A2» on French television.

In 2001, it was Daft Punk who brought Leiji Matsumoto back to the forefront, collaborating with him on the album Discovery and the animated film Interstella 5555. Matsumoto was a symbol, a poet, an iconoclast, a night owl who started his days at 10 pm and ended them with the sunrise. We were fortunate a few years ago to be able to speak with him in his lair.

It was obviously time for Otomo to return to this essential figure, the eye a little wet, the heart heavy, but the fist raised. Bon voyage Matsumoto-san. »
