In the Edo period, from the 17th to the 19th century, people did not have baths at home: so public baths were built to meet the need. There were about six hundred of these in Edo, nowadays the yuya style of baths remains in Japan through sentô and onsen.

Originally they were steam baths, and later large communal baths. As all bathers were naked and mingled without regard to age, gender or rank, the bathhouse was an egalitarian place.

Apparently, another popular shared element was a scented lotion made with floral essences distilled in a ranbiki (Japanese still).

The scent of this incense Oedo-Koh Water Drops Yuya no Shizuku  is reminiscent of the lukewarm steam that rises from hot water and the subtle aroma that emerges from the skin as you step out of the bath.

This fragrance, Yuya no-shizuku, adds a warm glow as you emerge from the bath!
