In Japan, the pine is considered a noble and luxurious tree, so the prefix tama (treasure) ? is sometimes attached to the Japanese name for the tree matsu ?.

It is traditionally considered that kami (deities) dwell in evergreen trees: the word matsu refers both to the tree (pine) and to wait (the deity). The pine tree, along with the bamboo and the plum tree, is one of the three trees of happiness, also known as 'the three friends of winter'. The association with the crane is also a good omen. In the New Year, decorations depicting the pine tree are displayed and a monumental pine tree is painted on the backdrop of the Noh stage.

With this Encens Oedo-Koh Tamamatsu Kaido savour the refreshing scent of the pine tree, the tree that protects travellers on the Tokaido ?? Road (the road travellers used in the Edo period) and ensures their safe return: this lively and refreshing aroma invites reverie in old Edo, with its pine-lined streets.
