Taiyaki たい焼き, small Japanese sweet wafers shaped like fish, are a Japanese favourite pastry. Traditionally filled with anko red bean paste, they can be found everywhere in Japan especially during festivals and fairs
Since time immemorial a lucky fish in Japan, the sea bream, named engimono no sakana, was still a luxurious fish in the Meiji era. Until 1909, when the Japanese had the idea to elaborate a pastry, inspired by a Japanese waffle imagawaki filled with anko.
Still round at the beginning, it was decided to launch sales by transforming the waffle into the shape of a fish, a sign of good luck in Japan: the success was immediate, Taiyaki was born!
